However, The Lego Movie is fantastic fun, inventive, very funny, and full of more creativity than any Transformers film will be, falling into that perfect point: a children’s film that can be enjoyed by people of any age.
Emmet is your everyday perfectly ordinary construction worker living in Bricksburg. His positive outlook on life helps him to fit in and all he craves is to be just like everybody else. All of that changes however, when he comes across the prophesied ‘Piece of Resistance’, the only thing that can stop the evil Lord Business in his attempt to release the Kragle (if you think it doesn’t make sense, that’s more to do with the film that this explanation). Soon Emmet finds himself in faraway lands, hanging out with Batman and falling in love with the nonconformist Wildstar.
The clip that this session focuses on is at the beginning of the film and sees the audience introduced to Emmet and Bricksburg for the first time. As Emmet makes his way to work - where they make sure that they smash anything that is weird - he follows the rule book on how to be a good citizen. At this point he has no idea of the adventure that awaits him.
After showing the clip as a stimulus, break into small discussion groups (you may wish to have a designated discussion leader in each group) and explore the following questions:
• What do you do to ‘fit in’ with the world around you?
• Are there some rules and situations where we should conform?
• Do you think that Emmet is happy with his lifestyle?
• Does our society celebrate people being unique - or people conforming?
After discussing the first set of questions, read through Galatians 3:28 and then 1 Corinthians 12:12-25 together (you may wish to give some context to the passages) and return to your groups to discuss the final set of questions:
• Is being equal just everyone acting the same?
• Are these two verses in conflict or do they promote the same message?
• What things should Christians conform to and go against in our society?
• Does your youth group celebrate individuality? How do you interact with other members on a daily basis?
