Together they have to overcome their differences to stop Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe.

In this particular clip we see the newly reunited Guardians of the Galaxy (who don’t actually realise they are part of the team just yet) discuss a plan on how to tackle Ronan and potentially save the galaxy. Quill and his team have failed at everything so far, and in a desperate attempt to rally them and do something good for once, Quill reminds the team that they all have something in common: they’ve all lost something and are in the need of true friends. (Please note there is one brief swear word in this clip.)

Show the clip, then break off into small groups or discuss the following questions as a larger group:

• Have you ever felt part of a dysfunctional team? What was needed for the team to improve?

• In life, are people’s words or actions more important?

• Have you ever felt moved to action after hearing someone speak, perhaps in a sermon or assembly? What did you do?

• Are the Guardians brave or foolish in the clip? Are these two qualities linked?

Turn to Acts 17:22-34 for Paul’s sermon at Areopagus. Use this as an example of a sermon delivered in the Bible and read it to the group or have a designated reader in each smaller group. You may wish to give some context to the passage. Discuss the following questions in the same groups:

• Do you feel inspired, annoyed, nothing, or something else when you hear these words?

• How did the crowd respond to Paul’s words? Why?

• Should Christians aim to inspire people with their words and bring groups together, or challenge people with their words if they believe them to be wrong?

• Who gives the more thoughtful and Christian speech, Paul or Peter Quill?

If you want a good film for a relaxed evening at youth group, you won’t go wrong with Guardians of the Galaxy - the young ones will love the action, the older ones will love the humour and the very old ones will recognise the 80s soundtrack!
