Sit down for dinner with Dan Stirling
Meal suggestion: Salmon fillets with baked sweet potato and seasonal veg. (The recipe is available from the links section of the Youthwork website.)
Grace : God of our daily bread, When we’re tempted to take too much, remind us of those who haven’t had a fair share. Help us to work for your kingdom here on Earth; a world where everybody has enough. Amen.
Starter – meet Dan Stirling
Dan Stirling is a young entrepreneur from South East England, and is responsible for many innovative ideas and companies. Recently, Dan was thinking about how he could put his business mind to the task of ending hunger. He remembered how his mother would so often say, ‘Finish your dinner; there are hungry children in Africa.’ That was his eureka moment - if we have leftovers, and they have famine, there’s a very easy way to fix that problem – let’s send our leftovers to Africa!
Watch Dan’s pitch and see what you and your group think of his idea. You can find the film (and order specially designed envelopes for those potentially sloppy leftovers) through the links section of the Youthwork website.
Main – chew it over
• What do you think of Dan’s idea?
• What might the negatives be of sending leftover food to Africa?
• At the moment, one in eight people worldwide don’t have enough to eat. Why do you think that’s the case?
Can you think of any ideas to help end world hunger that might be more successful than Dan’s?
Coffee – take action together
We know the idea of sending leftover food to Africa is absurd, but we believe that by making changes in the way we live our lives and by using our voice to campaign against injustice the world can be changed.
Make a New Year’s resolution to use your voice once a month for people whose voices don’t get heard very often. At your church, could you pray regularly for people living in poverty? Or could you write to your MP about an issue you care about? Tell each other what you have decided to do, so that you can use time together as a group to keep each other accountable to your resolutions.
