How did you begin leading worship?
I started leading worship when I was 18 at cell group – kind of by mistake. Our worship leader wasn’t around and when they asked if anyone wanted to lead, I forced myself to put my hand up.
What advice would you give to young people who feel called to lead worship?
Don’t get caught up with thinking of it as a career, just see it as a way to serve the Church – it’s nothing more and nothing less than that. Ultimately it’s for an audience of one: God. We get the privilege to not only worship him and connect with him for ourselves but also lead others to encounter him.
Tell us about your new album.
It’s a studio project and I’m really excited about it. I often find it easier to sing my prayers to God, so hopefully it will give voice to what other people want to express to him.
Do you have any tips for overcoming stage fright?
The great thing about worship is that people join in with you; your performance isn’t the focus. You need to think ‘I’m just worshipping the same as everybody else, I just happen to have a microphone!’
