Activity

With your mentee, discuss who has shown them faithfulness, and what faithfulness might look like in their own life for others and for the causes they believe in. We are let down by people and ideas so often these days that I would expect it could get deep quite quickly - be prepared for that.

Draw a line down a sheet of paper. On one side, they should write names of those who have inspired them and taught them about faithfulness through their own love. On the other side, names of those who have let them down, hurt them or made mistakes at their expense (some names will appear on both sides!). What do they feel they should do with both lists?

Discussion questions

  • What have you been committed to for the longest in your life? What can you learn about faithfulness from that?
  • What are the relationships you’re most loyal to? What ideas and ways of life are you committed to?
  • Describe a time when someone stuck by you, through a hard time or difficult situation. Why and how did they stick by you? What did that feel like?
  • Do you feel you have been faithful back to them?
  • Think of the times that people have let you down or betrayed you. Who has demonstrated a lack of faithfulness
  • Have you ever felt God has abandoned you? (Remind them that even Jesus felt this way on the cross - but God never leaves us.)
  • Have you ever been unfaithful? To other people? Have you ever let God down?
  • How does God want you to be? What does faithfulness look like for you?

Prayer

Bring the session to a positive end, recapping what you have learned about being faithful and encouraging them to develop these in their relationships.

Pray together. Forgive people by name. Pray blessings for them. Thank God for the goodness and faithfulness in people especially those who have stuck by you and helped you learn to be faithful yourself. Invite God to fill you and cause you both to overflow with the fruit of his Holy Spirit, especially faithfulness to God, and to other people, and to the right values and ideas in life.
