Winnie the most popular
A. A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh has been named the most popular children’s book of the last 150 years. The poll of over 2,000 adults put the first book at the top, ahead of Alice in Wonderland and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Roald Dahl was the only author with two books in the top ten, with The BFG and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory making the list. The most recently released book in the top ten was Julia Donaldson’s The Gruffalo.
Hitler quote sparks billboard furore
An Alabama-based children’s ministry has removed a billboard which included an Adolf Hitler quote, and has admitted that it was a mistake. Life-Savers Ministries (LSM) put up the advertisement which featured a group of children, Proverbs 22:6 and Hitler’s quote which said: ‘He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future’. The quote was taken from a speech in 1935 encouraging young people to join the Hitler Youth.
Parentalk launches ready-to-run course
Care for the Family has launched a new parenting course, Parentalk. The six-part course is available on DVD and designed to be run by churches and community groups. It is presented by Rob Parsons and Care for the Family’s Katharine Hill who said, ‘Parentalk is not about telling parents how they should bring up their children, but about giving positive encouragement and practical ideas that will help to boost children’s mental, physical and emotional development, and give parents confidence in their roles.’

A survey has shown that gardening is our favourite childhood memory. Other popular memories are going to the seaside, breaking up from school and learning to ride a bike. The poll, by QVC, revealed that gardening was extremely popular because of the time spent with parents, being outdoors and getting muddy.
