Moses was walking on Horeb mountain,

Watching old Jethro’s sheep,

When he noticed a not-burning burning bush,

And decided to take a peep. (Put hands over eyes.)

(The child / group repeats last line and action.)

“Take off your shoes,” said a voice from the bush.

“You stand on a holy place.”

“I’m the God of your fathers,” the voice went on.

Afraid, Moses covered his face. (Cover your face.)

“I have seen how my people suffer,” God said.

“I have heard every pain-filled cry.

Go to Pharaoh and tell him to set them all free.”

Moses trembled: “But who am I?” (Tremble and point to self.)

(The child / group repeats last line and action.)

“You’re my servant,” God said, “and I will be with you.

You’ll worship me here, one day.”

“But what if they ask who sent me?” said Moses

“What do you want me to say?” (Scratch head in puzzlement.)

(The child / group repeats last line and action.)

“Say that ‘I am who I am’,” God replied.

“Tell them I’ll set them free.”

“But why should your people believe me?” asked Moses.

“Why should they listen to me?” (Shrug and hold your hand to your ear.)

(The child / group repeats last line and action.)

“They’ll believe you if you show them this,” God replied.

“Throw down your staff on the clay.”

And when Moses did, it turned into a snake!

Frightened, he ran away. (Scream and run on the spot.)

(The child / group repeats last line and action.)

“When you pick up the snake by its tail,” God explained.

“It will turn back into your stick.

Put your hand in your cloak, now, and pull it back out.”

The sight of it made Moses sick. (Make retching sound.)

(The child / group repeats last line and action.)

It was covered in leprosy, whiter than snow,

Awful beyond all belief.

And then when he put it back in, it was healed.

Grateful, he sighed with relief. (Wipe forehead and sigh.)

(The child / group repeats last line and action.)

“If you pour out Nile water,” God said, “on the ground,

It will turn just as red as blood.”

“I’m sorry,” said Moses, “I’m still not your man.

You see, I don’t talk so good.” (Point to mouth.)

(The child / group repeats last line and action.)

“Who made your mouth?” God replied. “It was me.

I’ll put the right words in your head.”

But Moses was still not convinced and begged,

“Please send someone else, instead.” (Clasp hands as if begging.)

(The child / group repeats last line and action.)

“Take Aaron your brother,” God said at last,

In a voice rather angry and low.

“He can speak in your place, tell him just what to say.

I need you to go Moses. Go!” (Point forward.)

(The child / group repeats last line and action.)

So Moses went back and spoke to old Jethro,

And told him he had to leave.

Then went with his wife and his sons and his donkey

To set all God’s people free. (Pull hands apart as if breaking chains.)
