Coffee with Rebecca Hamer
On a cold blustery summer’s afternoon Rebecca Hamer and I found ourselves sitting in Pret. Unfortunately, we were sitting in different ones. Unbeknownst to me there are in fact three Prets between the station and our office, and I had failed to communicate the exact location of the coffee shop of choice. Third time lucky – after an unfortunate incident involving a poor unsuspecting blonde Phoebe lookalike – we arrived at the same place.

Down with holiday clubs?
The holiday club. It rolls around with crushing inevitability every year. The process for a summer holiday club might start as early as January, with the selection of the material and the formation of a core team. It moves on through the spring with recruiting volunteers, booking venues, collecting resources, practising dramas, training the team and more… on and on it goes. The glorious week arrives and in a whirl of children, stickers, shaving foam and yoghurt pots, finally, it’s done. And there’s a couple of months’ rest before the planning starts again.

Join our club
Last issue we looked at the benefits for children, schools and church relationships that come with running a breakfast club, but there are
lots of different clubs that can be run during or after schools as well. Midweek clubs, run in schools at lunchtime or after school as part of their extended provision, or in churches, can strengthen existing links between churches and schools and also be places where children can investigate God and meet him face-to-face -

The collapse of Kids Company has led to thousands of vulnerable children and young people losing vital support. The charity, spearheaded by Camila Batmanghelidjh, closed in August following financial difficulties, amid allegations of improperly handled sexual abuse cases. Founded in 1996, it was reportedly working with and supporting more than 36,000 young people a year, benefiting from business and government support.

First Class Delivery
Postman Pat: The Movie sees our favourite fictional mail delivery man auditioning for a show which looks quite a lot like Britain’s Got Talent. This got us thinking – what would other classic children’s TV shows look like if they got a 21st Century makeover?

Ready-to-use Mentoring: Clarity
This year I moved into a new role mentoring artists for a Christian record label. One of the key issues I find musicians struggle with is the muddiness of ‘not knowing.’ Not knowing what to do, how to do it, or why it matters. It restricts their creativity, undermines their goals and paralyses their to-do list! My advice is mostly common sense, but without an outside focus they don’t know where to begin or what to get on with first. The potential is there, but confusion robs them of achieving it.

How churches can support unaccompanied minors in Europe
The famous quote from Theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer sums up the mood of many this week: “The test of the morality of a society is what it does for its children.” Whilst “its children” could be interpreted as UK children; the parable of The Good Samaritan expands “its children” to anyone in need, the outsider, the one from other countries. This seems even truer today as we recognise the Global Village and Global City we call home.

The power of small churches
I grew up in a big church, with a big youth ministry. The smallest church I’ve worked in had about 600 in Sunday attendance, and the other churches I worked in ranged from 2,500 to 8,000 attendees. Much of this was because I was passionate about ministry with younger teens, and only larger churches tend to have the budget for a specialist in that area.

‘My church cut my hours’
At the start of summer 2011, if you had asked me, ‘How’s life?’ my response would have been, ‘Life is good.’ I had been the fulltime youth worker in my home church for almost 18 months. I had married a wonderful and supportive woman just over a year earlier and we were newly-weds creating a shared life together.

Five inventions that have 'helped' the Church
Inventions are created to make our lives easier. As Christians, we often have to fight for technological advancements to make their way into the Church. Whether that be the fight to get some cool new electric guitars into our worship, or the decision to update the stovetop kettle to an electric urn, there has often been opposition. But some inventions have made things genuinely easier. We look at some of the best below
