I’ve come to a realisation, and it’s taken me nearly ten years to get there. Confession time: I have always assumed that youth ministry was something that I’d give myself to with abundant passion and commitment… for a time. I’ve operated on the assumption that at some point, I’d stop doing this and progress on to something else. Not adult ministry, you understand – I couldn’t think of anything worse – but the pursuit of some of the other dreams and ambitions that I hold.

As we have explored lots of different kinds of schools’ work on page 26, we decided to go back to basics with this page and provide an assembly outline. This assembly is to be used around Halloween. Christians often struggle with Halloween, feeling unsure about how to approach such a commercialised event, which is tinged with darkness. However, the theme of darkness and light plays out across the Bible, so helping children discover Jesus as the light of the world at a time when the world is looking towards the dark can be helpful and timely.
