Why youth work is for everyone

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

I was chatting with a wonderful older lady at church on Sunday, called Betty. Having just watched the youth Christmas nativity, we were chuckling together about all of its weirdness and abstract meaningfulness. I commented on how she should get involved with the youth group, to which she replied with something I have heard time and time again: ‘Oh, I am too old for that!’

    Everyday Supernatural

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

Soul Survivor’s Mike Pilavachi and Andy Croft believe that seeing God’s supernatural power at work shouldn’t be the exception, but the norm. But what could this look like in the lives of young people and youth workers and what difference would it make?

    Grow Your Own Evangelists

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

Where are the Grahams, Wesleys and Spurgeons of the future? They might just be in your youth group. But evangelists don’t appear out of
thin air – they need training, nurturing, encouraging and releasing. YFC ’s Phil Knox insists that equipping evangelists must be a central part
of Your youth ministry, and gives some practical pointers for putting it into action

    Evangelistic Games

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

If you’re running an evangelistic event, a game might be the last thing you think of including - but don’t neglect the possibilities. Doing things like running a football or dodgeball tournament can be a great way of connecting with young people in your area - or more simply just having games at an evangelistic event can help people relax, and lower some barriers. Either way, while games should be fun, they can also be used to make a serious point - and here are some ideas of how to do so. (N.B. Some of the games and links are more tongue in cheek than others!)

Schools Work theme: Evangelism in Schools

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

There is a need to step carefully when using the word ‘evangelism’ in schools. Nick Shepherd, in his Grove booklet Schools’ Ministry as Mission (2008), gives us a helpful understanding of evangelism and what the mission of God looks like in education. The following session guide takes Shepherd’s three principles of evangelism as discernment, dialogue and demonstration, and uses them as a basis for working with Christian students to explore what living out their faith in school could look like. This should also be an encouragement for any Christians visiting schools to seek out what it means for them to share their faith with demonstration, dialogue and discernment.

    Engaging high-achieving young people

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

This, I'm sure, won’t come as any surprise, but young people are not all the same. There is no ‘quintessential young person.’ Try as we might by pouring over manuals and websites, we will not discover the perfect cookie cutter youth program. The scope of the variety of young people is as broad as humanity itself!

How do we engage young people in modern society with the Gospel?

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

When it comes down to most things, the method is a key variable of the output. If you’re given the ingredients for a cake without any instruction of how to prepare, the results are often poor (see the technical challenge on the Great British Bake Off).

How can we engage young people without professionals?

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

Earlier today, when asked whose responsibility it was to ensure the Church was reaching out to young people, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby was unequivocal in his answer: ‘Everyone’s. Any church that leaves things to the ‘professionals’ is committing missionary suicide. This is the responsibility of every single Christian, always, everywhere. What draws people in is, above all, community.’ We asked youth ministry consultant Ali Campbell how churches without professionals can engage with young people…

Nicky Gumbel: Three Ways to Empower the Next Generation

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

I am so grateful to Jonathan Fletcher. When I first encountered Jesus in 1974, Jonathan met with me for three hours every week for a year, and regularly thereafter until I left university. He became a great friend. He taught me the Christian faith. He explained to me how to read the Bible and how to pray. He recommended Christian books and answered my questions. Even though I had only just encountered Jesus myself, he encouraged me to lead others to faith in Jesus and to straight away pass on what I was learning.
