    Who would Jesus vote for?

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

If Jesus had UK citizenship today, what would he do in the forthcoming General Election? Proclaim our current system broken and encourage people not to vote? Engage in acts of civil disobedience in protest at injustice, tax avoidance and wealth inequality? We don’t know, but we do know that Jesus did politics. Here’s a few thoughts from youth work and politics expert Nigel Pimlott on engaging your young people with politics

    Jesus, light of the world

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

As we have explored lots of different kinds of schools’ work on page 26, we decided to go back to basics with this page and provide an assembly outline. This assembly is to be used around Halloween. Christians often struggle with Halloween, feeling unsure about how to approach such a commercialised event, which is tinged with darkness. However, the theme of darkness and light plays out across the Bible, so helping children discover Jesus as the light of the world at a time when the world is looking towards the dark can be helpful and timely.

    Ready-to-use Reflection: Seeing Jesus

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

The Bible says that Jesus is ‘the image of the invisible God’ (Colossians 1:15). There were no cameras in the 1st Century, so nobody can be sure what he looked like. Ever since Jesus’ incarnation, however, artists have created different images and representations of him ...

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

I preached in my church a couple of weeks ago, and was assigned a passage: 1 Corinthians 3. There were two strange aspects of this experience, both of which were good for me.

I grew up in church, and was a mostly-good kid and all. I went to Sunday School every week, so I heard my share of Bible stories; I heard my share of Jesus stories.

This month the Office for National Statistics revealed that unemployment rates in the UK have fallen by 58,000 to an estimated 1.91 million. Alarmingly however, the rate of unemployment among young people aged 16-24 has risen by 30,000 to a staggering 764,000.

    Q&A: Ishmael

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

It’s hard to imagine the world of children’s work without Ishmael. From his early days in a punk band, ‘Ish’ took over children’s work at Spring Harvest in the early 80s and has almost been an ever-present since with his trademark worship-rock style. Jamie Cutteridge caught up with him to reflect on the last 35 years.

    Premier Youthwork investigates...Nitrous Oxide

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

You don’t have to spend too much time in a park or street at the moment to find tiny, empty canisters lying around. You may not even notice them, but once you’ve spotted one, you’ll realise they’re everywhere. Nitrous oxide canisters - laughing gas or hippie crack (as the alarmist media would call it) - seems to be 2015’s social drug of choice.

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

Internships are everywhere at the moment: on every job site, in most companies and even in many churches. Internships are a great way for a young person to gain necessary skills and experience, and an ‘in’ to the industry they are seeking to work in. They are also hugely beneficial for employers, providing entry-level workers at minimal cost.

Premier Youthwork Investigates… New social media

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

We’ve all seen a heap of theological treaties on familiar social media: what would Jesus tweet? Do our Facebook profiles reflect the real us? How airbrushed are our Instagram selfies? But what about some of the newer, more unknown social media platforms? How are we, as youth workers, meant to respond to apps like Periscope and Snapchat. How can we protect our young people from their potential danger?

    Premier Youthwork Investigates… Selfies

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

Selfies, once again, hit the news recently. Not because Kim Kardashian posted another naked picture, or because Obama was papped with celebrity friends, but because of a Brit called Ben Innes. Ben was on a flight to Cairo when his plane was hijacked by a man in an explosive vest. Instead of cowering for his life, Ben decided to take a selfie with the hijacker. When asked why, he told The Sun: ‘I’m not sure why I did it. I just threw caution to the wind while trying to stay cheerful in the face of adversity’.
