    Have we forgotten overseas mission?

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

A few years ago - the sight of a tanned, heavily braceletted 19 year-old with braided hair strolling through the doors of church after a life-changing six months in Africa was a fairly common one. The pendulum of missional thinking now seems to have swung in the opposite direction – with less and less young people travelling abroad, choosing instead to spend their year out in the UK on an urban mission placement or church internship. National leader for YWAM England Carl Tinnion can’t help but ask: have we forgotten about overseas mission?

Schools Work theme: Evangelism in Schools

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

There is a need to step carefully when using the word ‘evangelism’ in schools. Nick Shepherd, in his Grove booklet Schools’ Ministry as Mission (2008), gives us a helpful understanding of evangelism and what the mission of God looks like in education. The following session guide takes Shepherd’s three principles of evangelism as discernment, dialogue and demonstration, and uses them as a basis for working with Christian students to explore what living out their faith in school could look like. This should also be an encouragement for any Christians visiting schools to seek out what it means for them to share their faith with demonstration, dialogue and discernment.

    Children and the evangelism debate

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

There are two schools of thought when it comes to children and evangelism. One recognises that children are incredibly receptive to the gospel, and can make a genuine and lasting faith commitment at a young age. The other meets the subject with suspicion, arguing that children are vulnerable in the power balance of adult to child – and therefore any attempt to coerce a faith decision at this stage is inappropriate.

Over the last few years, Christian youth work has stepped up to plug myriad gaps caused by statutory cutbacks. While we’ve gained credibility and a whole swath of new opportunities, have we lost our heart? Have we missed the point? Youth for Christ’s national director Neil O’Boyle thinks so…

Mission work isn’t just in Africa

    2017-01-19T00:00:00Z

When the words ‘mission’ or ‘missionary’ are mentioned, our minds can immediately fill up with images of young people and adults travelling to Africa and taking endless pictures of themselves with orphans, showing off their sunburnt shoulders and strap marks. But is this really what mission is about? Youthwork’s work experience student Sanna Hubbard explains what mission can look like for young people, here in the UK.
